On Saturday Randwick will host the final major race meeting of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, Epsom Handicap Day, featuring a bumper 10-race card including the $125,000 Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m).
The 2010 Chandon Craven Plate has drawn a diminutive but top class field of seven contenders lead by the hot favourite Triple Honour.
Chris Waller’s six-year-old gelding Triple Honour has opened at the very short price of $1.90 to win the Craven Plate through Sportsbet.
The Group 1 winner is coming off a solid second to Descarado in the Hill Stakes at Rosehill, is due to jump from barrier four and will have champion jockey Glyn Schofield aboard making Triple Honour look very hard to beat.
Second favourite in the Sportsbet markets for the Craven Plate is the Peter Snowden-trained Purple paying $3.80.
Five-year-old Commands mare Purple finished third in the Hill Stakes last start, before which she also ran third in the Chelmsford Stakes making her an excellent Place bet again here.
Other top contenders in Sunday’s Craven Plate that could cause an upset are 2008 Melbourne Cup placegetter C’est La Guerre at $9, Kingston Town Stakes third placegetter The Embassy drawn ideally in barrier one and currently paying $15, and Peter Snowden’s eight-year-old Spinney at a quote of $10 to win.
The Randwick meeting on Saturday is headlined by the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) featuring a star studded field lead by Trusting and the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) where No Wine No Song looks set to beat the favourite Herculian Prince.
The 2010 Chandon Carven Plate is scheduled as Race 3 and is due to jump at 12:55pm.
