Craven Plate News

Moriarty seized a thrilling win in the 2014 Craven Plate at Royal Randwick this afternoon. It was an extraordinarily tight finish which no doubt saw Moriarty’s punters’ eyes glued to the track with high hopes that the Clodovil gelding would be able to get around strong favourite Rising Romance. Craven Plate

The Craven Plate is a Group 3 thoroughbred race open to three-year-olds and up. It is run over 2,000 metres under weight for age conditions. The race takes place every October as part of the Sydney Spring Carnival at the Randwick Racecourse. Contenders compete for a total of $125,000. Interestingly, in 2007 the race was cancelled due to the Swine Flu outbreak. This marked the first time in nearly 25 years the race was not run.

The 2016 Craven Plate will be held on Saturday, October 1st.

Craven Plate Betting

The Craven Plate is held on the Epsom Handicap day of the Spring Carnival. This day also hosts both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and the Group 1 The Metropolitan. Both of these races tend to draw most of the betting attention, but punters should not overlook the Craven Plate, as it is the final weight for age event of the carnival. Horses that run in The Metropolitan often go on to run in the Melbourne Cup in November.

Other major races on the same program include the Group 1 Flight Stakes, and Group 2 events Premiere Stakes and Roman Consul Stakes.

While the Group 1 races may draw a higher calibre contender and offer higher stakes betting, the Craven Plate can be quite lucrative and is a great opportunity to pick up a little last minute action. In addition, the field of fantastic stayers that this race often draws results in some pretty interesting odds.

If you are looking to put down a wager on the Craven Plate, it is best to choose a horse that runs well at longer distances. Watch for a horse that did well in races such as the Group 2 Hill Stakes at Rosehill held two weeks prior to the Craven Plate, or the Group 1 George Main Stakes at Randwick held one week before. Of course, there is no better place to go to put down your wagers than an online sportsbook such as Ladbrokes.com.au, or bookmaker.com.au. Sites such as these often offer the most generous odds as well as plenty of conveniences that you won’t find at the local TAB.

The race features excellent competition with many of the horses going on to achieve fame in bigger races. This includes the likes of Mummify who preceded his 2005 Craven Plate win with a win in the 2003 Caulfield Cup and Singapore Airlines International Cup. Another famous contender was Tie The Knot who also took first place in the 1998-99 Sydney Cup and the Chipping Norton Stakes four years in a row (1999 – 2002).
